“the Beginning" is a unique piece within Brent Estabrook’s skull series, representing not only the latest evolution in his work but also a symbolic new era of creation. Painted in 2023, after a six-year gap since his earlier skulls, this piece reflects Brent’s artistic growth. While his previous skulls were focused on technical discovery, "The Beginning" comes from a place of mental and emotional growth.

The color palette in this piece is more mature, blending subtle grays, yellow ochre, Venetian reds, and a pop of green to create a refined yet vibrant composition. The anatomy of the teeth takes center stage, with intricate attention paid to the dentition. The white gesso panel background, devoid of color, enhances the negative space and ties this painting back to Brent’s earlier works, which also featured unpainted backgrounds.

Though titled "the Beginning," this piece signifies Brent’s feeling of constantly evolving as an artist, where each new painting represents a fresh start and a new adventure in his journey.
