the story of “impressionism”

"Impressionism" stands out within Brent Estabrook’s Skulls series as a piece almost entirely created with brushstrokes rather than his usual palette knife technique. The flowing circular brushstrokes are inspired by Estabrook’s then perception of Impressionism, a style he equated with expressive swirling movements reminiscent of the visual of the Baroque era. This piece showcases a unique, directional energy, with brushstrokes that seem both fluid and mechanical, adding a steampunk-like quality to the composition.

The color palette of “Impressionism” is predominantly composed of a rich brown and cream colors, a challenging choice that Estabrook embraced. Drawing from a quote by Cy Twombly, Estabrook considers brown one of the most difficult, yet rewarding colors to work with, and here it shines. This shade of brown is carefully crafted by mixing multiple colors — reds, blues, yellows — rather than using a naturally brown pigment, resulting in depth and warmth.
